7 Pitfalls all Network Marketers Need to Avoid – Part 1
Saturday, April 4, 2009 15:55
This is Part 1 of a series of seven posts I will be making on the major pitfalls that all network marketers need to be aware of.
Through these postings you will begin to understand why so many people fail in the network marketing industry. Thankfully for you, I am not only going to point out what is wrong, but more importantly how to avoid each one of them.
Pitfall # 1 Lack of Sponsor Support
The number one reason when you ask a failing person why they are failing they will tell you that they just don’t have the kind of support they need to be successful.
When a person gets started in network marketing they often have the chance to visit or be prospected by their sponsor. Have you ever had this conversation and heard things like:
- This is the easiest thing in the world anyone can do this!
- There is no selling!
- All you need to do is plug into the system!
- People are making thousands a month/day you will too!
And really what these sponsors are saying is that a large percentage of people are not making money, but if you get started you will make money and that will be awesome.
It is the money hungry personality that has no problem sitting on the phone telling you exactly what you want and need to hear in order to get your sale.
Okay, so you already know there are a lot of people out there that just want to take your money and then dump you, but here is the good news. I have already told you that the #1 pitfall for most people wanting to start a business is that they do not have the support they need in order to be successful.
So, instead of focusing on the negative aspects of many network marketing or internet businesses, let’s look at what you can do to protect yourself and how I can help you.
Before you start working on any business opportunity it is important for you to understand that 99.9 percent of people are in a network and Internet marketing business because they want to make money. I’ll categorize the other .01% as a fringe element that is not really sure which direction is up or down.
Knowing that, I have some tips and tricks for you to think about before you get started with any type of home or internet based business.
- Identify what is more important to you. Is it the product(s) or is it the people that you will be working with?
- You do not need to completely understand the compensation plan, but you do need to whether or not your sponsor is going to earn from your efforts month after month or just one time.
- In addition to your sponsor what kinds of support systems and training are in place for you to use?
- Is there a proven marketing system that I will be able to use and will I be taught how to use it?
Now, let’s briefly review each one of these so we can make sure you are 100% clear on them.
1. While products are important, it is important for you to be working with a sponsor/mentor who is either in the process of becoming successful or already is successful. You want to be able to learn from a successful person? So, even if the business you pick has the very best product(s) in the world, if you don’t know how to get traffic and customers to your website then you are in trouble. Also keep in mind that most people are looking to work with people and not a product. If you are a good people person then you have a better chance of being successful in this type of business
Mentor 1st, Product 2nd!
2. One of the things I know to be true with all compensation plans is that if you enroll people you will make money. If you don’t get people to signup for the business then you will not earn anything. So what matters is that you can enroll people and that you have a sponsor that is motivated to work with you and make you successful. As stated earlier people are in this industry to earn. So, if there in no monetary reward for them to continue to help you earn money then it is very easy for a sponsor to leave you in the dust.
Make sure that there is a reason for your sponsor to continue to help you. Don’t just think that they want to help you because they like you or because you sound like a nice person.
3. If your sponsor really is successful then they are most likely very busy and probably do not have time to work with you one-on-one. This is a good thing, provided there are enough other support mechanisms in place to provide you the knowledge and information that you need. In today’s world there are social networks, bulletin boards, forums and other means of communications like live webinars where a sponsor can assist and teach many people at one time. If a sponsor tells you, that you can call or email them any time is not good enough because they will not be able to handle the volume. It is also very difficult for them to teach you what you need to know over the phone or in email. You have to have a place to go to see it and learn how to do it.
4. Every day I hear people say they have the very best product and company. I ask to see their website and they send me to some kind of corporate information page. Now don’t get me wrong, there is a time and place for corporate sites and information but not in the beginning.
Internet businesses and network marketing are very competitive fields so you must work smarter–not just harder. If you are marketing a corporate site or system, you need to know that so are about 95% of the rest of the people in the company. If you are not different than everyone else then you are sunk and money is going to be hard to come by. BE DIFFERENT, have a marketing system outside of the company that is focused on the income opportunity and selling people, not products then you have an awesome chance at making money.
In summary of today’s report – make sure that you know the four main points I make above. Know what kind of support is available, beyond just your sponsor because you are going to need it.
Apply this new information you have just learned and it will help protect your from getting connected to a sponsor who just wants your money and will then leave you behind.

If someone is selling you a system to make money, they are making money by selling the system. Its not impossible to make money using a program you purchase, in fact some people make a lot of money that way. However the reality is the odds are stacked against you.
