banner4 How to Make Your Blog Standout in a CrowdWith thousands of blogs being created every day many bloggers wonder how to make their blog stand out. It’s really very simple, all it takes is effort.

There are many types of blogs and purposes for blogs.  There are also many different tactics that are applicable to getting your blog noticed. There are really no secrets to successful blog marketing.  The following tips should benefit your blog and make it more attractive to blog readers.

Each of these topics is a topic onto itself in that pages and pages could be written on each one of them.

1.      Select a stand alone domain name, e.g. www.megarich.org or a folder of an existing site www.taxesandliens.com/blog. It is advantageous to pick a domain name that is relevant to your blog.  Ideally, your blog’s domain name will contain the/a keyword for what you primarily blogging about.  Using a Sub domain is also an option, e.g. blog.mysite.com.

2.      Obtain and install the blog software – WordPress is free and is the most popular on the market.

3.      Do a search for WordPress themes until you find one you like.  You can find the install instructions for WordPress blogs at WordPress.com.  Set up your blog theme’s appearance.

4.      Research keywords and develop a list of your primary keywords – GoodKeywords3, Keyword Discovery, WordTracker, etc.

5.      Optimize the blog:

  • For every post you write make sure it contains a keyword in the title
  • Setup all your plugins
  • Setup all your categories and links with keyword rich titles

6.      Enable automatic trackback and ping functionality.

7.      Create Feedburner Pro account and enable feed tracking.

8.      Setup the Google Sitemap, using the WordPress Google Sitemap plugin, validate and prep for future submission.

9.      Identify authoritative blogs and web sites and set up outbound links to them in your Blogroll

10.  Setup your archived posts, related posts, recent posts and recent comments plugins.

11.  Setup statistics for tracking the performance of your blog – there are plugins for these as well

12.  Submit RSS feed and Blog URL to prominent RSS and Blog directories / search engines.

13.  Start an ongoing backlink building campaign by submitting articles, commenting on other blogs, getting listed in blog directories, etc.

14.  If podcast or video content are available, submit to Podcast and Vlog directories.

15.  If you have the money, submit your blog url to paid directories with categories for blogs

16.  Distribute a press release announcing you blog to the world

17.  Join online forum related to your blog’s topic and request feedback or reviews of your blog. If you have an interesting post that will help others, point to it.

18.  Research and comment on relevant industry related blogs and blogs with significant centers of influence.

19.  Post regularly. If it’s a news oriented blog, -5 times per day. If it’s an authoritative blog, -5 times per week, but each post must be unique and high value.

20.  Monitor the inbound links, traffic, comments and mentions to your blog – MyBloglog, BlogCatalog, Technorati, etc.

21.  Always reply to comments on your blog and when you see your blog mentioned on another blog, enter a comment thanking that blogger for their post.

22.  Contact other related bloggers on and offline if possible and consider being guest authors for each other.

23.  If using someone else’s content always cite the author and provide a link back to the original site and don’t be afraid to mention popular bloggers by name.

24.  Use keywords in the title of your blog post, in the body of the post and when you link to other posts you have made.

25.  Announce your blog postings to the various social networking services. If your posts look interesting they will link to you.

Remember when web sites were a new concept and the sage advice to print your web address everywhere you print your phone number? The same advice applies for your blog.

    Awesome Article! I linked too it in today’s post on my blog. So many good points, it’s hard to pick out my favorite. But the marketer in me likes number 5 and 20. I think they are two that are often overlooked by a lot of bloggers.

    Great list! I really lack on the keywords on my blog. I love to focus on the promoting but spending time on titles, categories, and keywords is just annoying. But I just have to do it and I’ll get better at it I’m sure!
