Search Engine Optimization – Key to Business Survival
Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:44The Importance of Search Engines to the Survival of Your Business
SEO – To get your business website or blog seen by your potential customers you must be on the first page of search results on the major search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo. It is only through the search engine optimization that your website will be noticed by prospective customers. Without customers, you will not succeed.
When someone searches for a topic on the Internet the search engines will sift through the millions of pages it has indexed and look for web pages that match the topic (keywords) being searched for.
The matches the search engines find are then ranked, so that the most relevant ones come first. You need to keep in mind that a prospective customer will most likely only look at the first 2-3 listings in the search results. So it does matter where your website appears in the search engine ranking. Rarely, will a searcher look past page one of the search engine results.
Additionally, people searching the Internet will only use one of the top 6-7 search engines (but usually just the top three – Google, Bing and Yahoo) and these search engines attract more visitors to websites than anything else. In most cases, it all depends on which search engines the customers use and how they rank your site.
It is the search terms (aka Keywords) that play the most important role. More so than any expensive online or offline advertising of your website.
Surveys show that a when customers want to find a website for information or to buy a product or service, they locate relevant sites in one of the following ways:
- The first option is they find their site through a search engine.
- Secondly they find their site by clicking on a link from another website or page that
relates to the topic in which they are interested. - Sometimes, they find a site by hearing about it from a friend or reading in an article.
Therefore it is obvious that the most popular way to find a site is by using a search engine. The search engines represent more than 90% of drawing an online user to a site. In other words, barely 10% of the people looking for a website will use methods other than search engines.
All search engines use ranking algorithms and one of the main rules in a ranking algorithm is to check the location, relevancy and frequency of keywords on a web page. The search engine algorithms also consider the link population of your site (the number of web pages that link back to your site).
The vast majority of business owners do not know how to perform the necessary search engine optimization to get their websites listed high in the search engines. As a result, their websites never get noticed and their overall business suffers from a lack of customers. This is one huge reason why many business owners hire specialists to get their SEO work done and get high search engine rankings.
When performed by a qualified, experienced search engine optimization expert, a business owner’s site can achieve high rankings and display on the first page of search results. Optimizing your search engine rankings really does work to. You will draw in more customers that can easily pay for the fees you paid out to hire an SEO expert. With better knowledge of search engines and how they work, you can also do it on your own, but it takes a lot of work and very specific knowledge to be done correctly.
Finally, not all SEO experts can provide the same results so it is important to pick one with a long track record of success. Do your research!
